Buying your boating equipment on eBay

You've heard about buying things on eBay – it seems like everyone is doing it. People get great deals on everything from shoes to houses. But did you know that eBay also is the largest marketplace for new and used boating equipment?

What is eBay?

EBay is an online auction website. While there is more to it than just that, what it all boils down to is a website where sellers of items can list their products and buyers of items can bid on said products. EBay started with sellers wanting to get rid of their old stuff (kind of like an online garage sale) but as the popularity of the website increased, manufacturers and warehouses started getting in on it too. Now you can find surplus items from warehouses at a discount, used items for sale, and even brand new items at wholesale prices. Any item for sale goes to the highest bidder, although there are now some options that allow you to buy the item right away as though you were buying the item right off the shelf. So what's the big deal about eBay? Almost all of the items you find are cheaper than if you went out and bought the items from a store. It's a win-win situation - sellers can make a profit and buyers can get the item for a steal.

EBay Safety

If you're buying boating equipment from someone on eBay, how do you know you'll get the item you paid for? How do you know that it will be shipped on time? How do you know the item isn't damaged? It's all about feedback. Feedback is literally the lifeblood of eBay. When a buyer purchases something from a seller, he or she can leave feedback about the transaction. Feedback is recorded and can be viewed by any potential buyer or seller on the website. If the transaction was poor, such as the item was shipped late or was damaged in some way, the buyer can leave feedback detailing what happened. The next buyer will then be able to see the seller's previous record and decide if he or she really wants to buy from that seller. While feedback is an extremely useful tool on eBay, it doesn't guarantee a flawless transaction. There are some things you can do to help make things go smoothly.

· Always check feedback before you buy. Always. Don't buy from someone who has a poor record, although, one negative feedback in a vast list of positive feedbacks can indicate a poor customer instead of a poor seller.

· Always leave feedback after you've completed a transaction.

· Communicate with the seller. Many problems can be resolved by simply sending an email or picking up the phone.

· Don’t save money on shipping insurance. Some listings on eBay suggest that insurance is optional, however, you can run into a world of trouble by not having your items insured.

· Pay with PayPal. PayPal is a great payment solution where the seller doesn’t get any of your sensitive card information. Paying with PayPal is free, and signing up only takes a few minutes.

· Watch out for spoof emails or spam. EBay never asks for sensitive information, including credit card numbers or passwords, in an email. If you suspect that an email appearing to be from eBay is something else, eBay’s Security Center will appreciate if you let them know and they will also be able to tell you if the email came from eBay.

·  Never make a purchase outside of eBay. If a seller asks you to go around the eBay system this may be a fraud attempt, and if you do this eBay will not be able to help you if you run into problems with the transaction.

· Ask for help if you need it. EBay offers excellent customer support, so if you have a question, just ask!
